A sulfur smell at the tap is one of the two most common water complaints we hear around Tyler and Smith County. It is also one of the most commonly misdiagnosed, because two completely different problems produce exactly the same smell. Here is how to tell them apart before you spend money.
Start here: where do you smell it?
Run the cold tap and smell it. Then run the hot tap and smell that. Where the odor shows up points straight at the source.

That last row matters more than the others. A smell that has been there for years is usually a nuisance to be engineered away. A smell that appeared in the last few weeks on a private well is a reason to get the water tested properly.
What hydrogen sulfide actually is
It is a dissolved gas, not a particle. That single fact explains why so many of the obvious fixes fail. You cannot strain a gas out with a sediment filter, and you cannot settle it out by letting the water stand. It has to be converted into something filterable first, then removed. In groundwater it occurs naturally, which is why private wells across East Texas run into it far more often than homes on county water do.
It also does not stay put. Hydrogen sulfide is corrosive to plumbing, fixtures, and the inside of appliances over time, and it can tarnish silver and darken copper and brass. So even when it is purely a nuisance at the tap, it is quietly costing you something behind the walls.
Is it dangerous?
Here is the honest answer: people can smell hydrogen sulfide at concentrations far below the levels that would raise a health concern, so if you can smell it, that alone does not mean your water is unsafe. In most households it is a nuisance problem rather than a medical one.
What it is not is a reason to shrug. It corrodes your plumbing, it makes water unpleasant enough that people stop drinking it, and on a private well a sudden new odor can be a signal that something about the well has changed. None of that gets resolved by guessing. It gets resolved by testing the water and reading the actual numbers, which is what the free on-site test is for.
Why the usual home remedies do not hold
- Filter pitchers and faucet filters. Built for taste and chlorine at one tap, not for a dissolved gas arriving at the whole house. They are overwhelmed quickly and the smell continues everywhere else.
- A water softener on its own. A softener is designed to remove hardness minerals. It is the right machine for scale and spots, and the wrong machine for sulfide. Softening and sulfur removal often sit in the same treatment train, but one does not do the other's job.
- Shocking the well with bleach. This can knock the odor back for a while. If the sulfide is coming from the groundwater itself it returns, sometimes within weeks, because the source was never addressed.
- Masking it. There is no additive that makes hydrogen sulfide stop being hydrogen sulfide. If the smell is gone but nothing was removed, it will be back.
What actually fixes it
If the source is your water heater, the fix is at the heater and it is comparatively inexpensive. If the source is the water coming into your home, the sulfide has to be oxidized into a filterable form and then trapped and backwashed away, at the point where water enters the house, so the smell is gone at every tap, hot and cold. The size of that system comes from your measured sulfide level and your household's flow rate, which is exactly why we test before quoting rather than after.
