Orange-brown staining on sinks, tubs, toilets and laundry is the most visible water complaint we see around Tyler and Smith County, and it is almost always the same culprit: dissolved iron. The good news is that it is measurable, and once it is measured it is very fixable at the source.
Why it happens at all
While your water is under pressure inside the pipe, the iron in it is dissolved and completely invisible. Fill a glass and it looks clear. The moment that water meets air, the iron oxidizes and drops out of solution as an orange-brown particle, and it deposits on whatever surface it happens to be touching at the time.
That is the whole mechanism, and it explains everything about where the stains appear. They concentrate wherever water sits, drips, or dries slowly: the toilet tank and bowl, the bottom of a tub, the rim around a fixture, the inside of a dishwasher. It is not that those places are dirtier. It is that those places give the iron the most time and air to do what iron does.

Why scrubbing never wins
Cleaning removes the deposit. It does nothing to the cause. The next time water runs, fresh iron arrives, meets air, and starts a new layer. Homeowners often go through an escalating cycle of stronger cleaners and shorter intervals, and the cycle only ends when the iron is taken out of the water before it reaches the fixture.
What iron is actually costing you
At the levels typical around Smith County, iron in water is not a health hazard. The damage is to your house and your patience: staining on fixtures and laundry, a metallic taste, and buildup accumulating quietly inside pipes, water heaters, and appliances. Iron also fouls other equipment. Push enough of it through a water softener and the resin loads up, the softener loses capacity, and you have two problems instead of one.
What actually stops it
Iron is removed by forcing the reaction to happen inside a tank instead of on your sinks. The system oxidizes the iron deliberately, catches the resulting particles in filtration media, and backwashes them away on a schedule. Done properly, the water arriving at your fixtures no longer has iron in it to deposit, and the staining stops rather than slows.
The media and tank size come directly from your measured iron level and your household's flow rate. That is not a formality. Undersize it and the system exhausts before the day is out; oversize it and you paid for capacity you will never use. It is also why nobody can quote this honestly over the phone.
